Theo Zscherny, 90

Funeral service for Theo F. Zscherny, 90, Williamsburg, formerly of Middle Amana, was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 30, at the Middle Amana Community Church. He died Monday, May 27, 2013, at Marengo Memorial Hospital, Marengo.

Burial was in the Middle Amana Cemetery with military honors.

A memorial fund has been established.

Theodore Ferdinand Zscherny was born Jan. 7, 1923, in Amana, the son of Jacob and Minnie Metz Zscherny. He attended the Amana schools and served in the U.S. Marine Corp for three years, stationed in San Diego, and the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific.

Upon his return, he was employed by Iowa Steel and Iron Works, the Amana Woolen Mill and then worked at Amana Refrigeration for 22 years, retiring in 1988.

He married Lorraine Schaedlich Nov. 29, 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids. The couple resided in Middle Amana until recently, when they moved to Highland Ridge, Williamsburg.

He enjoyed baseball and football and stamp and coin collecting. He also enjoyed gardening and made stocking caps for homeless veterans. He was a member of the Amana Church Society, the Amana Heritage Society and Marengo American Legion Post 76.

Zscherny is survived by his wife, Lorraine; one son, Michael and Barbara Zscherny, Ely; one daughter, Constance and Kenny Bahr, Goshen, Ind.; six grandchildren, Jason Bahr, Fort Dodge; Andrew Bahr, Santa Barbara, Calif.; Tiffany and Jason Arnett, Fort Wayne, Ind.; Lisa and William Brown, Cedar Rapids; Amy and Dennis Fulkerson, Lisbon, and Chad and Joy Zscherny, Des Moines, and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Leona Hill, and one brother, Henry.
