Norma McGuire, 73

Funeral service for Norma A. McGuire. 73, formerly of Marengo, was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, at St. James Lutheran Church, Victor. A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, she entered eternal peace June 15, 2013, at Parkview Manor, Wellman, after a long struggle with Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA).

The Rev. Michael Kolesar officiated at the service.

Burial was at the Ohio Cemetery, rural Ladora.

Smith Funeral Home, Victor, was in charge of arrangements.

Norma Ann McGuire was born May 19, 1940, near Victor, the daughter of Harvey and Martha Schultz Wiedemeier. She graduated as valedictorian of her class from Deep River High School in 1958.

She married Robert Coghlan Dec. 12, 1958. The couple had two daughters, Jill and Paula, and one son, Jay.

She later married John McGuire Sept. 19, 1981.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Victor. Her faith was strong and she was very devoted to church. She was baptized June 9, 1940, by the Rev. Young and confirmed April 11, 1954, by the Rev. Weiss.

She had many passions. She loved to cheer on the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs. She also loved flowers and tending to her garden. She enjoyed cooking for others and hosting family gatherings, especially Easter. Some of her best dishes included noodle casserole, beef and noodles and her world famous red velvet cake.

One of her many talents included quilting and sewing. Her children and grandchildren enjoyed wearing her creations for many events, including Halloween and Christmas programs.

She had a love for the outdoors and during the summer months you could find her camping at Lake Iowa and the Iowa State Fair. She was a devoted fan of the Iowa State Fair, which she attended nearly every year.

Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, chorus and band concerts and simply just visiting with them when she had a chance. Her biggest smiles came when her house was filled with the love of her family.

The family would like to thank the Parkview Manor, Wellman, staff for the excellent care and compassion they showed our mother during her stay there. We are truly blessed to find such a wonderful group of people.

McGuire is survived by her children, Jill Happel, Brooklyn; Paula and Dave Doran, Ladora, and Jay and Tess Coghlan, Marengo; step-daughters, Barb and Terry McGahuey, Ladora, and Pat Fry, Smyrna, Tenn.; grandchildren, Tyler and Samantha Happel, Tawny Happel, Connor and Mariah Doran, Dawson Coghlan, Jenny and Brian Schnebbe, Jessie and Ben Van Waus, Matt and Lezlie Fry and Mike and Kelly Fry; great-grandchildren, Malcom Happel, Michael and Nicole Schnebbe, Owen, Olivia and Aiden Van Waus and Hayden Fry; sisters, Lois and Leland Winegarden, Deep River, and Bev and Rich Schrader, Greeley, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; one brother, Jerry Wiedemeier; one nephew, Mark Widmer, and one brother-in-law, Richard Widmer.
