John Mulvhill, 85

John F. Mulvihill III, 85, Williamsburg, died Monday, June 10, 2013, at the Iowa City VA Hospital, surrounded by his wife and their six children.

A reception was held Sunday, June 16, at the American Legion Hall, Marshalltown.

Memorials may be made to the Williamsburg Public Library or the American Lung Association.

The Cremation Society of Iowa was in charge of arrangements.

John Francis Mulvihill III was born Sept. 15, 1927, in Welton, the son of Edna (Hill) and John Mulivhill. He grew up and attended schools in Oskaloosa.

He served in the Navy and then began working for the M&Stl/Chicago Northwestern Railroad in 1947. He was employed as a brakeman/conductor for 42 years.

He married Delores Andeway, daughter of Lester and Imogene Andeway, at St. Mary’s Church, Oskaloosa, June 22, 1950.

He enjoyed golf, cards, reading, fishing and watching or listening to St. Louis Cardinals baseball. His stories, quick wit and wry observations were appreciated by family and friends.

Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, who are thankful for his long life.

Mulvihill is survived by his six children, Virginia Mulvihill and Larry Rodl, Davenport; Mary and Mike Patterson, Cedar Rapids; John and Kathryn Mulvihill IV, New Glarus, Wis.; Kathleen and Mark Splittgerber, Des Moines; Teresa Mulvihill, St. Louis, Mo., and Timothy and Kelly Mulvihill, Greenwood, Ark.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and one sister, Dorothy Hinmon, Marshalltown.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
