Funeral service for Dorothy F. Hertel, 92, South Amana, was held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 24, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Homestead. She died Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Colonial Manor, Amana.

The Rev. Terry Small officiated at the service.

Burial was in the South Amana Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established.

Dorothy Frances Hertel was born Jan. 7, 1921, in Guthrie, Okla., the daughter of Benjamin and Gertrude Haley Fowler. She attended school in Guthrie.

She married Edgar Hertel Oct. 19, 1938, in Kirksville, Mo. She traveled with her husband to various states.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead. She especially enjoyed putting complicated puzzles together and reading. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Hertel is survived by her children, Harold and Jeanne Hertel, South Amana, and Helen and Lial Selzer, Homestead; three grandchildren, Scott Selzer, Neil and Rebecca Selzer and Tim and Erica Hertel; five great-grandchildren, Gabriel Selzer, Adrian Selzer, Carter, Dalton and Peyton Hertel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1981; her parents; three brothers, Ralph, Barry and James Fowler, and three sisters, Hazel Belvins, Gladys Baugh and Mabel Clark.
