Charles Hollopeter, 83

A celebration of life memorial gathering for Charles E. Hollopeter, 83, Williamsburg, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at the Marengo American Legion. He died Friday, May 17, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital.

There will be military rites, followed by lunch and fellowship.

Memorials may be made to Safe Haven of Iowa County.

Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Williamsburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Eugene Hollopeter was born Aug. 16, 1929, south of Ladora, the son of Charles Oscar and Laura Ida (Slaymaker) Hollopeter. He was a 1947 graduate of Ladora High School. He was drafted into the United States Army, where he served as a sergeant during the Korean Conflict.

He married Jo Walton Dec. 18, 1953, in Marengo. The couple lived in Ladora until 1998 and at The Rio Grand Valley, LaFeria, Texas, for 10 years before moving to Williamsburg.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and loved being outdoors, camping, mowing and gardening.

Hollopeter is survived by his wife, Jo, Williamsburg; two sons, Thomas and Jeanne Hollopeter, Brooklyn, and Tim and Rae Jean Hollopeter, Ladora; five grandchildren, Heather Hollopeter, Belle Plaine; Lisa Hollopeter, Grinnell; Amy and Nick Arens, Hartwick; Samantha Hollopeter and fiance Gene Condon, Williamsburg, and Wendy and Graham Oswald, St. Louis, Mo.; five great-grandchildren, Chryton and Graydon Arens, Gavin, Tyson and Nora Oswald; one brother, Bill Hollopeter, Ladora; one sister, Betty Hollopeter, Marengo, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary and Hazel, and three brothers, Lawrence, in infancy, Frank and Dean.
