Mitchell Campbell, 84

Celebration of life service for Mitchell F. Campbell, 84, North English, was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg. He died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at his home after a long battle with cancer.

The Rev. Gary Sears officiated at the service. Organist was Peggy Wardenburg. Music included “How Great Thou Art,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “Amazing Grace.”

Burial was in the Garrison Cemetery, rural Garrison. Casket bearers were David Karsten, Alan Karsten, Mike Sturtz, Stanley Jordan, Steve Karsten, Gary Karsten and Mark Sturtz. Honorary casket bearers were Kenney Karsten, Donald Dill, Larry Sturtz, Delbert Sturtz, Jeff Stratton and Bill Baker.

Memorials may be made to the English Valley Care Center, North English, and Iowa Hospice.

Mitchell Franklin Campbell was born Jan. 8, 1929, in Mercer County, Missouri, the son of James E. and Alta (Baker) Campbell. He graduated as valedictorian of Newtown High School, Newtown, Mo., in 1949. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

In 1957, he married Emma Mae Sturtz at St. Martin’s Church, Marengo. The couple lived in Missouri before making their home near Homestead for many years.

In 1999, they moved to North English. He was a hard worker and worked for various companies over the years, including ASCA office and farming in Missouri; Wilson Packing and Rinderknecht Construction, Cedar Rapids; Amana Lumber Yard; the Amana Feed Mill for 30 years and Holden’s/Monsanto, Williamsburg.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, and the Oxford American Legion.

While living in Missouri, he served on the school board. He enjoyed singing silly songs to the grandchildren, spending time with his family, being outside and had a love of animals.

Campbell is survived by his wife, Emma Mae, North English; three sons, Duaine and Lori Campbell, North English; Dayle and Kelli Campbell, Hamilton, Ohio, and Darrell and Emily Campbell, Homestead; six grandchildren, Dustin Campbell, Lindsay and Stu Plecker, Jacob and Alex Campbell, Carly and Cady Campbell; one great-granddaughter, Emma Lynn Plecker, and one sister, Norma Jordan, Robins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Nathan Campbell.
