Elizabeth Blechschmidt, 99

Funeral service for Elizabeth “Betty” Blechschmidt, 99, Amana, was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Middle Amana Community Church. She died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

Church elder Jon Childers officiated at the service.

Burial was in the Middle Amana Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Amana Church Society or the Amana Heritage Society.

Elizabeth “Betty” Louise Blechschmidt was born Feb. 9, 1914, in Middle Amana, the daughter of Jacob and Louise Schmieder Dickel. She attended the Amana schools and then attended the Cedar Rapids Business School.

She married Fred “Joe” Blechschmidt May 18, 1944, in Missouri. He died Sept. 23, 1987.

She was employed as a secretary for the Amana Society for many years. She worked until she was 90 years old.

She was a member of the Amana Church Society.

Blechschmidt is survived by one stepdaughter, Rosie Brower, Silver Springs, Md.; several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Willard and Mary Lou Dickel, Middle Amana; one sister, Marie Schaefer, Davenport, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Johanna Kellenberger and Wilma Schaefer.
