Barbara “Bobbie” R. Brecht, 68, died Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Marengo Memorial Hospital following a 13 year battle of multiple myeloma. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 7, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo with Father Joseph Roost as celebrant. Interment will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blairstown. Visitation also will be held at the church in Marengo from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial fund has been established.

Phillips Funeral Home in Blairstown is in charge of arrangements.

Bobbie was born March 17, 1944, at Coatesville, Pa., to Marvin and Ella (Baumgardner) Meek and graduated from Gilroy Union High School, in Gilroy, Calif. in 1962. She attended Hartnell College in Salinas, Calif.; Eastern Arizona Junior College in Thatcher, Ariz.; and in 1968, she graduated from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz. She worked at the Lucky Hereford Ranch in Gilroy, Calif.; was secretary to the president and board of trustees of Gavilan Joint Junior College in Gilroy and secretary for the Gilroy Union High School. After graduation, Bobbie taught typing to 7th and 8th graders at Snowflake, Ariz. She worked a year at each of these establishments.

In 1965, she met Leonard “Butch” Brecht at the Arizona National Livestock Show in Phoenix. They were married on Nov. 22, 1969, in Springerville, Ariz. They then moved to Parnell, Iowa, and after eight years moved to Blairstown.

She was a lifelong partner to her husband and owned and operated the B4 Cattle Company for the past 26 years. She was the secretary/treasurer of the Iowa Chianina Association for the past 28 years and was responsible for Chianina Sale at the Iowa Beef Expo. “Butch” was the breed supervisor at the Iowa State Fair for 15 years and she was instrumental in those duties even after his death. She enjoyed working outside, feeding cattle, cooking, gardening and the grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Brandee (Mike) Roquet of Fremont; and her son, Beau (Karen) Brecht of Blairstown; her grandchildren, Tayte and Brylee Lindemier of Fremont; and her sisters, Doris (Phillip) Hart of Burkes Garden, Va. and Judy (Scot) Eustis of Las Vegas, N.M.

Bobbie was preceded in death by her grandparents; her husband in 2009; her mother in 2010; and her father in 2012.
