Loretta Young, 88

Funeral Mass for Loretta A. Young, 88, St. Louis, Mo., was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Saints John and Paul Catholic Church, Altoona. She died Friday, March 1, 2013.

Burial was in the Altoona Cemetery.

Pence-Reese Funeral Home, Newton, was in charge of arrangements.

Loretta Alicia Young was born Jan. 11, 1925, in Marengo, the daughter of Peter and Loretta (Kibbie) McGivern.

She married David N. Young Dec. 2, 1950, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo. The couple lived on their farm near Altoona for 52 years. Most recently, they lived in St. Louis, near her daughter and her family, Elizabeth and Robert Fitzgerald.

She received a bachelor of science degree in business in 1950 from the University of Iowa, where she met her spouse of 62 years, David, Newton. After the couple reared their eight children, she worked for Meredith Corporation and the Natural Resources Council of the State of Iowa, Des Moines. She enjoyed being a mother and grandmother, volunteering at her church, serving as PTA president, serving on pro-life committees, volunteering for the American Cancer Society and playing bridge.

She was a member of Saints John and Paul Catholic Church, Altoona, and most recently, St. Monica Catholic Church, St. Louis. She was a woman of deep Christian faith, who always put the love of God and family first. She was kind and generous to others and her Irish warmth and humor have left treasured memories for all who knew her.

Young is survived by her husband, David, St. Louis; four daughters, Elizabeth and Robert Fitzgerald, St. Louis; Rebecca and Larry Sterbick, Red Oak; Maureen Zirbel, Clearwater, Fla., and Laura and Leo Brazeau; four sons, David Jr., Zuni, Minn.; Thomas, Dubois, Wyo.; John and Chris Young, Cold Spring, Minn., and Mark and Jill Young, West Pueblo, Colo.; 20 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Maureen and John Martin, Palo Alto, Calif.; Theresa and Dr. Alvin Mauer, Memphis, Tenn.; Peggy Perez, Los Angeles, Calif.; one brother, Edward J. and Jillian J. McGivern, Keystone, and many nieces and nephews.
