Margaret Kochuyt, 89

Funeral Mass for Margaret Kochuyt, 89, Victor, was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Victor. She died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

The Rev. Brian Shepley officiated at the service. Organist was Marilyn Kriegel, and vocalist was Dan Kochuyt.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Victor. Casket bearers were Cari Jack, Erica Jack Sherman, Mandy Jack Weldon, Curt Pieper, Dale Kochuyt, Jon Kochuyt, Cary Wegener and Charles Kochuyt. Honorary casket bearers were Andrea Roth, Kaitlyn Roth, Tracy Pieper, Jennifer Grace, Tina Mullnix, Chris Kochuyt and Nathan Kochuyt.

Smith Funeral Home, Victor, was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Kochuyt was born Nov. 20, 1923, in Moline, Ill., the daughter of Joseph and Julia Martha VanDenBussche Depoorter. She attended Sacred Heart School, Moline. After her education, she assisted her dad on the milk route, helped care for her Aunt Marcella and worked at a theater. Later, she worked at a licorice factory in Moline for many years.

She married Albert Kochuyt Aug. 29, 1946, in East Moline, Ill. The couple moved to rural Ladora, where he worked on the Geis farm. In 1960 they purchased their own farm in rural Ladora. They moved to Victor in 1976 after retiring.

The couple enjoyed attending dances, playing cards and going to casinos. She continued these activities after her husband’s death in 1996.

She kept busy by traveling to bingo events with friends. She was always the driver to these activities and inherited the name designated bingo driver. She was a gentle and kind hearted lady and cherished spending time with her family. She will be greatly missed.

Kochuyt is survived by her children, Donna and Lonnie Jack, Victor; Kathy Roth, Brooklyn; Robert and Melinda Kochuyt, Ladora, and Dan and Rhonda Kochuyt, Center Point; daughter-in-law, Jeanne and Larry Kochuyt, Ladora; two sisters, Julia DeBlaey, Rapid City, Ill., and Theresa and Doug Wilson, Durant; two brothers, Joseph Depoorter, East Moline, Ill., and Bob and Nancy Depoorter, Moline; two brothers-in-law, Nyle and Anne Wegener and Lee and Rose Glaudel; 20 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Albert; one son, Larry; an infant son, Johnny; a granddaughter, Patti Kochuyt; a great-grandson, Jake Kochuyt; her parents; seven sisters, Ann Wegener, Dorothy Saelens, Rose Glaudel, Betty Shumaker, Antoinette “Toni” Smith, Marie Ratto and Clara Roach, and two brothers, George and Lawrence Depoorter.
