Louise Banes, 89

Celebration of life service for Louise F. Banes, 89, North English, was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Powell Funeral Home, North English. She died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at the hospice unit of Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

The Rev. Michelle Williamson officiated at the service.

Burial was in the North English Cemetery.

Memorials may be made for Iowa City Hospice.

Louise Faye Banes was born Dec. 16, 1923, in Floyd County, and was adopted by her parents, Ellsworth and Elsie Taylor Van Fleet. She had lived in the North English community since the age of seven and graduated from North English High School in 1941.

She taught rural school near Marengo and the White Pigeon community for one and one-half years.

She married William Melvin Banes Dec. 13, 1942, in South English. They farmed in the White Pigeon community before moving into North English in 1978.

She was a wonderful cook, baked great pies and cooked at the high school for several years. She loved to dance. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and served as den mother for the Boy Scouts for many years.

Banes is survived by her husband, William, North English; one daughter, Karen and Harley Westfall, Riverside; three sons, Ronald and Barbara Banes, North English; Jeffrey and Lori Banes, Williamsburg, and Kevin and Shari Banes, North English; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ethel Hildebrand, Bettendorf; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Van Fleet, North English, and Donna Criswell, Shenandoah.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Pearl Rogers, and brothers, Charles Van Fleet, Ed Criswell and Bob Hickman.
