Donald W. Herman, 80, Charles City, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at the Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehab Center, Belle Plaine. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Burial will be in Beckwith Cemetery, rural Charles City.

Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.klosterfuneralhome.com.

Donald W. Herman was born March 4, 1932, in Momence, Ill., the son of Charles A. and Annie E. Bowers Herman. He received his GED in Metropolis, Ill., and served in the U.S. Air Force.

He married Sharon L. Dickhoff Feb. 8, 1958, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles City. The couple later divorced.

He was employed as a floor covering installer for many years. He enjoyed playing his guitar and was an avid reader of science journals. He was an adventurous man and loved taking long rides on his motorcycle. Biscuits and gravy for breakfast was his favorite restaurant meal. He was a very generous man and was always willing and ready to help his family and friends.

Herman is survived by one son, Jeffrey W. Herman, Charles City; two daughters, Cindy L. and Ron Reihman, South Amana, and Deb I. and Phil Sanders, Smyrna, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Davidson and Eric Jamaica, Mason City; Lauren Brown, Marengo; Austin Davidson, South Amana; Ashley Kloster, Charles City; Brittany Kloster, Tennessee; Elijah Herman, Charles City, and Johnny Sanders, Smyrna.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harvey and Howard Herman.
