Carl Selby, 95

A celebration of life memorial for Carl W. Selby, 95, Williamsburg, will be held March 16 at Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg, with the family present from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. He died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg.

A general memorial fund has been established and may be sent to Karla Gallo, P.O. Box 367, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Carl William Selby was born Jan. 4, 1917, in Sioux City, the son of Bert and Ellen (McFadden) Selby. In 1931, his family moved to Bronson, where he graduated from Bronson High School in 1935. Following graduation, he attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls. Before serving his country as a gunner’s mate with the U.S. Navy during World War II, he taught high school history at Wapello and Dike.

He married Agnes Weldon April 23, 1955, in Parnell. After the service, he signed a contract with Parnell School where he taught high school and elementary for 37 years before retiring in 1982.

His summer employment included Amana Refrigeration, Milwaukee Railroad, Component Homes and in 1970, he began working for Holden’s Foundation Seeds Inc.

He once said, “The difference between a rut and a grave is that of dimension.” He stated, “I never found that to be true.”

Selby is survived by five daughters, Vicki and David Wise, Goshen, Ky.; Katie Selby, Juneau, Alaska; Leann and Joseph Wilson, Parnell; Karla and Tony Gallo, Grinnell, and Donna and Dan Dyson, Palm Bay, Fla.; four sons, Burt Selby and Dawn Folkman, Parnell; Bill Selby, Colorado; Bob Selby, Parnell, and John and Kristin Selby, Boone; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, in 1996; his parents and one son, Scott, in 1973.
