Funeral services for William A. Young, 93, South Amana, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Middle Amana Community Church. He died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, at Colonial Manor of Amana.

Church elder Tony Berger officiated at the service.

Burial with military honors was in the South Amana Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Amana Church Society or Essence of Life Hospice.

William Alfred Young was born May 23, 1919, in South Amana, the son of George and Helene Bopp Young. He graduated from Amana High School in 1938 and went to work for the Amana Farms. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre.

He married Helen Dietrich May 3, 1947, in Cedar Rapids. He was employed by Homestead Implement as a mechanic in the 1950s. In 1959, he went to work for Amana Refrigeration as a press operator, retiring from there in 1986.

He was a member of the Amana Church Society, the Marengo American Legion and the Amana Young Men’s Bureau.

Young is survived by three sons, Clyde, Amana; David and Patricia, Joice, and Laverne, South Amana; two grandsons, Robert and Sara Young, Cedar Rapids, and Kurtis and Alexis Young, New York, N.Y., and three great-grandchildren, Madison, Kenzie and William, and one sister, Emily Oehl, Amana.

He was preceded in death by his wife, in 2009; his parents and one brother, Gerald, in 2005.
