Funeral Mass for Helen K. Plotz, 94, Marengo, was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo. She died Wednesday morning, Aug. 22, 2012, at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo.

The Rev. Joseph Roost officiated at the service.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo.

Memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Altar and Rosary Scholarship Foundation or the Iowa Valley School Foundation.

Helen Katharine Plotz was born Jan. 8, 1918, in Iowa City, the daughter of John H. and Elsie Mae Trimble Bishop. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1935.

She married Vincent “Pat” Connor Feb. 8, 1941, at St. Patrick’s Rectory. The couple had two children, Joanne and John. He died Jan. 20, 1974.

She married Lawrence Plotz Aug. 30, 1974, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Norway. He died in 2006.

She was a telephone operator for Ma Bell during World War II. She worked at Amana Refrigeration and also at the Pioneer-Republican newspaper. She became the editor of the South Benton Star Press and at Marengo Publishing and remained in that capacity until her retirement. She also was a photographer and recorded many area weddings.

She enjoyed her photography pastime and playing bridge. She especially cherished the time she spent with her family and friends.

Plotz is survived by her daughter, Joanne Freshour, Cedar Rapids; one daughter-in-law, Mary Connor, Manchester; six grandchildren, Keri Freshour (Jeff Rokicki) and Karla and John Farrell, all Pottstown, Pa.; Matthew Connor and Patrick Connor, both Manchester; John Connor, Ames, and William Connor, St. Louis, Mo.; three great-grandchildren, Reese Rokicki, Marlee Farrell and Nicholas Farrell; one sister, Marjorie Ball, Dubuque; four step-children, Larry and Sherry Plotz, Marion; Karen Wesack, Middle Amana; Carol Bradfield, Denver, Iowa, and Marian and Carl Consumano, Manassas, Va., along with several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, John Connor; a step-son-in-law, Steve Wesack; a step-grandson, Chad Wesack, and a step-great-grandson, Justin Bradfield.
