Memorial services for Robert Kiekhaefer, 71, Joplin, Mo., were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He died Friday, June 29, 2012, at his home.

Burial of ashes will be held at a later date in Waco, Neb.

Parker Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Dean Bob Kiekhaefer was born Nov. 26, 1940, in York, Neb., the son of Erwin and Estella Knorr Kiekhaefer. He attended Williamsburg and Atkins High Schools and later attended Rowan Technical Institute, Salisbury, N.C.

He served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1963 and during this time was a clerk working with radio teletype intercept. He later worked as a step press operator in Germany. He held several positions throughout his adult life including a Maytag repairman, business machine repairman and a firefighter. He later worked for insurance companies as a consultant regarding fire safety.

During his careers, he had lived in Omaha, Neb.; Bel Air, Md.; Kansas City, Kan.; Orlando, Fla.; Sioux Falls, S.D., and Joplin.

He was a great handyman, helping out many friends through the years and especially enjoyed working with stained glass. He enjoyed singing and had a wonderful bass voice. His greatest attribute was that he loved people.

He is survived by his wife, Emily Schoenbohm Stevens, who he married Nov. 12, 1977, in La Vista, Neb.; one sister, Gayle McGilvrey, Altoona; one son Eric and Hedi Kiekhaefer, St. Paul, Minn.; one daughter, Wendi Walsh, Seattle, Wash.; stepsons, Christopher and Leslie Stevens, Troutdale, Va.; Paul and Cheryl Stevens, Orlando, Fla.; Jonathan Stevens, Dallas, Texas; stepdaughter, Laurie and Bob Luley, Granville, Ohio; granddaughter, Shannon Kiekhaefer, St. Paul; nephews, Daniel Kiekhaefer, Ankeny, and Andy Kiekhaefer, Iowa City; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
