Mr. I. N. Schooley Answers the Last Call.
Mr. I. N. Schooley, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home in York township on Thursday last after an illness of several seeks. The funeral services were held at the home on Sunday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. Baumgarten of the M. E. church and Rev. John Roberts of the Congregational church. The M. E. Choir was in charge of the song service. The interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery and the services at the grave were in charge of the Masonic fraternity. The active pall bearers were J. C. Nicoln, Hon. Ed. Boland, D. E. Evans, W. H. Jones, C. H. Hastings and J. A. Cashman. The honorary pall bearers were the members of the Reese Lloyd Post, G. A. R.
Israel N. Schooley was born at Springdale, Iowa, sixty-six years ago and here he lived until the flame of the Civil War called him to meet the stern demands of patriotic duty. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. K, 8th Iowa Cav. and in this organization he shared the varying fortunes of war, among other engagements, participating in the battles of Nashville, Franklin, and Kenesaw Mountain.
In September 1868 he was united in marriage at West Liberty, Iowa, to Miss Mary Wells. To this union were born four children. These, together with the mother remain to mourn the loss of a parent whose whole life was marked by love and kindness. The children are: Charles, Mrs. Sadie Williams, Elisha J. and Lydia, all of this community.
The Schooley family came to Iowa County in 1873 and first located southeast of Victor. Twenty-seven years ago Williamsburg was selected as the home, and, with the exception of three years spent at Traer, this has been the home of the family. For several years Mr. Schooley was proprietor of the Williamsburg Brick and Tile Works and his business relations with the community were always marked by a course that commanded the respect of all. Last spring the family moved to a farm in York township and it was here the old soldier responded to the last call.
Mr. Schooley was a good man and during his long residence here he never lacked the love and esteem of his neighbors. Always thoughtful and considerate of the rights of others, always a loyal and honest citizen and a faithful member of the M. E. Church he lived a life entirely free from blame or taint.
To the grief-stricken wife and children the condolences of the entire community are offered in this the time of their great sorrow.
