Lester Frank Schmitt, was born March 5, 1926, in Sigourney, Iowa the son of John and Susan (Reining) Schmitt.

He attended school in Harper and was a member of the United States Army, where he was a Sergeant in the Korean War.

On June 16, 1952, Lester married Ann E. Miller, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Harper. They have lived on the farm since their marriage.

He was a life long farmer. Lester was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, North English and the Keota VFW. He enjoyed golfing and playing cards, especially pepper.

Lester died on Thursday, May 3, 2012, at the English Valley Care Center, North English, at the age of 86 years.

He is survived by his wife Ann of Wellman; a son Michael (Mary Jo) Schmitt of Kinross; 2 daughters: Terri Schmitt of West Des Moines and Sandi (Bill) Van Dee of North English; 6 grandchildren: Sydney Van Dee, Rachel (Alex) Ralston, Lindsey (Adam) Nechanicky, Jordan Schmitt, Kelli Schmitt and Klint Schmitt; 2 great grandchildren: Carson and Mitchell Nechanicky; and a sister Rose Haggerty of Glen Ellyn, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers and 7 sisters.

Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, North English. Fr. Joseph Roost will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery, Wellman, with Military Rites. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-7 PM at the Powell Funeral Home, North English with a prayer service at 4:00 PM.
