Mass of Christian burial for William D. Newcomb, Phoenix, Ariz., 61, was held April 20 at St. Mary’s Basilica, Phoenix. He died April 15, 2012, in Phoenix.
William “Bill” Dennis Newcomb was born Aug. 12, 1950, in Williamsburg, the son of William James and Winifred Josephine (Hogan) Newcomb.
He was an editor of “The Poobah Review” in his hometown. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1968 and moved to Phoenix to attend Phoenix College.
He married Clemence Elizabeth McMindes July 5, 1975. He served as a lector and eucharistic minister at St. Mary’s Basilica, Phoenix. He was active in GAIN, “Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods,” and was a past member of Neighborhood Housing Services.
He was a dedicated employee for 26 years at Techniprint, a friend to all and a hero to cats and dogs everywhere. He was one of the friendliest and most generous people on the planet and was definitely a hale fellow, well met.
Newcomb is survived by his wife, Clemence, and his dogs, Merlin and Luxor, Phoenix; one brother, James, and his wife, Susan Van Dyck, Memphis, Tenn., and sisters and their husbands, Caryl and Richard Jensen and Marcia and John Hogan, all Williamsburg; Winifred J. Newcomb, St. Paul, Minn., and Mary Newcomb, Maplewood, Minn.; brother-in-law, John McMindes Jr. and wife Patricia; sister-in-law, Monica McMindes; nieces, Katherine Coles, Margaret Coles, Anastasia Coles, Bridget Pierson, Kirsten Jensen and Connal Boyd, and nephews, Eric Jensen, John Jensen, Thomas Jensen, William Newcomb and Nathanial Newcomb.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest sister, Sheridan Coles.
