Private family graveside services for Orville W. Mumby, 97, Marengo, were held recently. He died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg.

A memorial fund has been established.

Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.klosterfuneralhome.com.

Orville Walter Mumby was born Oct. 15, 1913, in rural Ladora, the son of Walter and Gertrude Close Mumby. He attended school in Ladora.

He married Florence Linda Gates Aug. 3, 1941. He was a lifelong resident of Iowa County and farmed until 1976. The couple continued to live at the farm near Ladora where they had resided since March 1949. In 2009, they left the farm and moved to Highland Ridge, Williamsburg.

In retirement, he was busy watching and talking farming with his family and friends. He also spent time entertaining his grandsons on their many trips to stay at the farm.

He was a proud man who lived off the land and worked very hard every day to provide for his family and take care of Florence in the later years of their lives. He was as patient as he was calm. He may have had bad days in life but you would never know that when you spoke with him.

Mumby is survived by his wife of 69 years, Florence, Williamsburg; one son and his wife, Larry and Mary Mumby, Denver, and two grandsons, Adam Mumby, Waterloo, and Chris Mumby, Marion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lloyd and Vernon Mumby, and one sister, Gretchen Kinzenbaw.
