Evelyn Lucille Behrens was born March 11, 1921, in Milwaukee, Wis., the daughter of Theodore and Eleanor Hasenstein Berninger. She graduated from Milwaukee High School in 1939 and attended secretarial school.

She married Burton Harris Behrens Feb. 12, 1949, in Milwaukee. The couple later divorced.

She was employed as a file clerk and supervisor for an insurance company in Milwaukee. When she settled in Marengo, she was employed with the Iowa County treasurer’s and assessor’s offices.
She was a “big city” girl who turned “country” when she moved to Iowa. For nearly 50 years, she enjoyed living north of Marengo on a farm in the “Marengo Mountains.” Her love of animals was very evident. She raised and buried three golden and three black retrievers that she cherished deeply.

She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, singing with the choir for many decades. She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to several card clubs. She was a member of the Iowa Valley Booster Club and enjoyed spending time with her family and the many friends she made over the years.

She moved into Prime Timers Apartments and resided there for over three years before moving to Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo, following a stroke.

She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She was a good friend who will be missed by many. The earthly void left by her passing will be easier to accept knowing of her strong Christian belief that she is at everlasting peace with her Lord and risen Savior.

Behrens is survived by two children, Susan Barkhurst and husband Gary, Cranberry Township, Penn., and Steven Behrens, Marengo; three grandchildren, Jessica Barkhurst, Cranberry Township, and Emily Behrens and Brian Behrens, both Marengo, and one sister and her husband, Audrey and Henri Kruse, Milwaukee.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
