Antone George Wagner was born Jan. 3, 1917, in rural Oxford, Johnson County, the son of Carl and Nellie (Wagner) Wagner. He attended schools near Oxford and worked as a farm hand for area farmers in the Oxford and Homestead areas.

Dec. 4, 1940, he married Agnes Katherine Sandersfeld in Conroy. The couple moved near North Liberty in the early 1940s, where they, along with Wendyll and Lois Stoner, partnered to farm until retiring in 1980, when the couple moved to North Liberty. She died Aug. 16, 1997.

He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Iowa City, and a member of the Johnson County Farm Bureau. Within the Farm Bureau, he was a vocal advocate for farmers having health insurance. A true farmer at heart, he loved the outdoors, his farming, gardens and caring for his yard. He loved collecting vintage tractor and car models and mechanically reworked a 1929 Ford Tudor.

Playing cards with family and friends, bingo at Senior Dining and the care center were all things he enjoyed doing in good health and mind until just a few months ago.

Wagner is survived by two children and their spouses, Alvin and Alta Wagner, North Liberty, and Elaine and Kenneth Cook, Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Lyle Wagner (Christine Sorensen), Kathlene Hoech (Peter), Denise Fesler (Christopher) and Kevin Cook; two great-granddaughters, Meleah and Mallory Fesler; sisters-in-law, Lillian Sandersfeld, Williamsburg, and Barb Sandersfeld, Marengo, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents; one sister and her husband, Paulena and Ralph Bowler; one sister-in-law, Regina Jacobs, and brothers-in-law, Raymond Sandersfeld, Ralph Sandersfeld and Leonard Jacobs.
