George “Louie” Kapfer was born April 21, 1928, in West Liberty, the son of Louie and Clara (Volk) Kapfer. His family moved to the Oxford area where he graduated from Oxford High School. He then attended the University of Iowa. He served his country in two wars and in two different branches of the armed services, first in the Army during World War II and later in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

He married Zelda (Sweet) Zeithamel July 9, 1963, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oxford. For over 35 years, he worked for Proctor and Gamble, Iowa City, retiring in 1991.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Oxford American Legion. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was in his glory when he was on a fishing trip with family or friends. The other passion which ranked just under his love for family and friends was the Chicago Cubs, as he would say, “next year, just wait.”

His family would like to thank Heidi, Kelly and the staff at Country View Care Center and the College of Nursing, Geriatric Nurses for the professional, compassionate and sincere care of Louie these past years. They would also like to thank Sue Randall for the fun, mushrooms and the time she gave Louie. A special thanks to Gary Busche for his support through the years and his assistance in taking care of Louie.

Kapfer is survived by one daughter, Judi Busche, Oxford; one granddaughter, Kelly Vermace, Pennsylvania; his siblings and their spouses, Pete Kapfer, Cedar Rapids; Tommy Kapfer, Illinois; Dick and Carol Kapfer, Florida; Mary Ellen and Roger Marks, Cedar Rapids; Judie and Bill Behrens, Maryland, and his brother-in-law, Robert “Moon” Kahler, Oxford.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents and two sisters, Joyce Brack and Patricia Kahler.
