Funeral Mass for Katherine K. Winborn, 99, Marengo, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg. She died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo.

The Rev. Joseph Roost will officiate at the service.

Burial will in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Williamsburg.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Rose Haven Nursing Home or Marengo Memorial Hospital.

Katherine Honora Winborn was born Nov. 13, 1911, in Keokuk County, the daughter of Alex and Katie Manion Kitzmann. She graduated from What Cheer High School in 1927 and received a business degree from AIB Business School in Des Moines.
She married Mardis K. Houseman June 24, 1939, in Des Moines. The couple settled in Williamsburg. He died Jan. 9, 1973.

She married Lewis Winborn June 12, 1980, in Williamsburg. She worked for many years at O’Neill Oil Company as a bookkeeper and receptionist.

As her high school yearbook said, she had the “gift of gab.” She had a genuine concern for friends and relatives and enjoyed visiting with everyone. She grew violets and many other flowers and plants and shared these with others. She enjoyed crafts, especially knitting and tatting. She made and shared many wonderful craft creations.

She loved her family and was an important part of her grandchildren’s lives, both when they were young and as they matured. She enjoyed traveling, both in the U.S. and in Europe.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Williamsburg, and the Altar and Rosary Society and the Garden Club.

Winborn is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Kathie and Bill Ballard, Marengo, and Mary Ann and Jim Boardman, Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren and their spouses, Barb Ballard, Marengo; Billy and Kelsey Ballard, Marengo; Lori and Kevin Short, Oklahoma; Jim and Carrie Boardman, Cedar Rapids, and Erin and Travis Hess, Colorado; seven great-grandchildren, Blake Heller and wife Jasmin, Lisa Heller, Sidney Ballard, Matt, Joe and Zach Short and Rachel Boardman, and one great-great-grandchild, Maddex Heller. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; one sister, Lucille Kitzmann, and one brother, Loren Kitzmann.
