Carl L. Hogendorn, age 76, contributing editor and retired owner-publisher of the North English Record, died Sunday morning, December 7, 1986 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City of a heart ailment. Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 10 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Burial was in the North English Cemetery.

Carl was born December 24, 1909 at Colfax, Iowa. He married Bertilla Driscoll in 1936 at Williamsburg, Iowa. He worked at newspapers in Strawberry Point, Colfax, Grundy Center and Wellsburg (all in Iowa) before going to North English in 1933. He became owner of the North English Record in 1955. In 1946 he helped organize the Press Columnists of Iowa and served as its first president. He was named master editor-publisher in 1962 by the then Iowa Press Association.

Surviving are three sons: Terry Hogendorn of North English, Iowa, David Hogendorn of Waukon, Iowa, and Lenny Hogendorn of Toledo, Iowa; 7 daughters, Jo Rae Pieffer of Fairfield, Iowa, Marsha Raitt of Iowa City, Iowa, Denise Naughton of Waterloo, Iowa, Leslie Slaubaugh of Wellman, Iowa, Honore Johnston of Davenport, Iowa, Kris Berg of Iowa City, Iowa and April Rouner of Iowa City, Iowa; 3 brothers, David Hogendorn of Des Moines, Iowa, Paul Hogendorn of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Frank Hogendorn of Walnut Creek, California; 3 sisters, Ruth Palmer, Myrtle Robuck and Lucille Stiles, all of Des Moines, Iowa; 26 grandchildren and one great-grandhild.
