John C. Klever, an old and highly respected pioneer of Pilot Township, died Monday morning, August 13th at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Hofmaster, east of Marengo. He was in his 75th year and his death would be rightfully attributed to the frailties of old age.

The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the Pilot Grove church, and were conducted by the Rev. S. E. Cole of Attica former pastor of Pilot Grove. He was assisted by the Rev. Mr. Spurgeon, pastor of Pilot Grove. The sermon was preached by the Rev. Mr. […] and the splendid character of […d] pioneer was given a merited […] by his former pastor.

The music was furnished by a [….]from the M. E. church choir, Williamsburg, consisting of the […]W. M. Doughty, Mrs. W. D. […], Miss Ethel Ogle and Mr. El […] Pugh.

Interment was in the Pilot Grove cemetery beside the body of his wife who preceded the husband in death by eight years. The pallbearers were C. D. Lortz, W. K. […], Bert Yearian, J. P. Schlesselmann, John Walter and George Welsh. A large number of relatives, old friends and neighbors were present at the services.

John C. Klever was born in Holstein, Germany on October 9, 1853 and was baptized and confirmed in Lutheran faith in the land of his […y]. At the age of thirteen he came to this country with his parents in 1867, first locating in Marengo.

On August 25, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Rebecca Lane and the home was established on a farm in Pilot Township.

To this union were born seven children; two preceded the parents in death and the wife and mother in February, 1920.

After residing on the farm for […-one] years, the home was made in Williamsburg. One year after the death of his wife, the deceased made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Henry Hofmaster, who was all that a daughter could be, doing everything possible to fill the evening of his life with the things that would prolong twilight.

The deceased is survived by five children: Lizzie Klein, Marengo; Minnie Fant, Williamsburg; Millie Klever, Williamsburg, Mary Hofmaster, Marengo, Lewis Klever, Cedar Rapids. Besides these there are 26 grandchildren and three great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. He is also survived by one brother, Charles, of Audubon County, and one sister, Christina Miller, Marengo.

John C. Klever was well known in the community and to attempt to […ize] his character would be en […] superfluous; he was honest to a fault, industrious throughout his […] God fearing and morally right. He was for years a member of the […med] church, but when his children became affiliated with the M. P. Church, he joined with them at Pilot Grove and was a faithful member until his death.

His life was an example for others and against it no person can file a single note of objection. Greater […] than this may not be given to […] kind.

To the bereaved children and other relatives, the community extends its sincerest condolences.

CARD OF THANKS

[…] take this means to express to their kind friends and neighbors the sincerest appreciation of the many acts of kindness shown during the illness and at the death of a parent.
