Celebration of life service for Gerald W. Newberry, 90, North English, was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service, North English. He died Nov. 27, 2010, at the English Valley Care Center, North English.

The Rev. Michelle Williamson officiated at the service.

Burial was in the North English Cemetery.

Gerald William Newberry was born June 27, 1920, west of Millersburg, the son of John and Vera Churchill Newberry. He graduated from North English High School in 1938. He served in the US Army from 1942 until 1945, during World War II.

He married Greta Ballard Dec. 20, 1941, in Kirksville, Mo. After returning home from the war, he started farming and farmed for over 60 years.

Newberry is survived by his wife; his children and their spouses, Eldon and Nancy Newberry, Amana; Daryl and Joan Newberry and Karl Newberry, all North English, and Lynette and Dan Rickels, Anamosa; seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Loren, in 1946; his parents; his sisters, Hazel O’Brien, Helen Huston and Marvel Olson, and one brother, Mace Humphrey.
