Mass of Christian burial for Edmund A. Volk, 92, Oxford, was held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oxford. He died peacefully Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

The Rev. Edmond Dunn officiated at the service. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Oxford, with full military rites.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oxford, or the Edmund Volk Memorial Fund.

Edmund A. Volk was born Aug. 29, 1918, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, the son of William and Anna (Cox) Volk. He graduated from Cosgrove High School in 1937.

He married Agnes Keating in 1947 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Iowa City. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Army Signal Corps and arrived in Normandy, France, on D-Day.

He worked in Iowa City while studying agriculture sciences through the GI program. He went on to remain in Johnson County and pursue his lifelong passion – farming. He was very proud to have been one of Iowa’s first Charolais cattle breeders. He was a very loyal member of the American Legion for 65 years. He treasured the many friends he formed in the area and was known for his generosity to friends and family.

His family would like to sincerely thank all of the staff at Pleasantview Home, Kalona, for the wonderful care given to him while he was a resident there.

Volk is survived by one daughter and her husband, Ellen and Raymond Haman; brothers and their wives, Maurice Eugene and Barbara Volk and Kenneth and Eleanor Volk; grandchildren, Jon Haman and wife Laurie and Alysia Haman; great-grandchildren, Parker, Grant and Lillian Haman, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two brothers, Harvey and George, and three sisters, Camille Reyhons, Genevieve Montgomery and Mary Catherine Anderson.
