Rev. C. Lackey Officiates At Funeral Held Friday; Interment Was at Marengo

Funeral services for Mrs. Edward Pope were held in the Jones Funeral Home in Williamsburg Friday afternoon, November 27th, at 1:30 o’clock.

The officiating minister was Rev. Clarence Lackey, pastor of the Pleasant Grove Brethren Church. Music was furnished by Mrs. Russell Herdlicka, Mrs. Leo Jordan, and Mrs. Dwight Erteld.

The interment was in the IOOF cemetery at Marengo, Iowa. Pallbearers were Frank Allen, Elmer Miller, George Butler, Guy Miller, Art Miller and John Donohoe.

Mary Catherine Pope, daughter of Fred and Christena Miller, was born Dec. 7, 1873 at Marengo, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Mr. Edward Pope Jan. 1, 1896 at Marengo. Mrs. Pope departed from this life at her home in North English, Iowa around 12 noon, Nov. 25, 1953, at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 18 days.

Surviving relatives are her husband Edward Pope, three sons and two daughters, who are Mrs. Clarence Bell of North English, Everette of Williamsburg, Russell of North English, Alfred of Webster and Mrs. Wanda Schlesselman of Williamsburg, also seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, one sister, Mrs. R.A. Simmons of Marengo besides a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mrs. And Mrs. Fred Miller and two sisters, Mrs. Sophia Tiernan and Mrs. Minnie Smith.

Mrs. Pope united with the Pleasant Grove Brethren church October 14, 1906. She taught a Sunday school class for several years and was active in the church as long as she was able.

Her early married life was spent at Pleasant Grove. Later she moved to Williamsburg and then in 1945 she moved to North English. She was devoted to her home and family and was a great lover of flowers. Also, she was a member of the Iowa Rebekah Lodge and the American Legion Auxiliary of North English.
