Mrs. Sarah Noonan

Mrs. Sarah Noonan, widow of the late Patrick Noonan, died at her home in this city on Monday morning, October 16th, 1922, after an illness of about four and a half months.

Sarah Welch was born in County Galway, Ireland, on the first day of November, 1854.

She came to America when a girl and located at Muscatine, Iowa, at which place she was united in marriage with Patrick Noonan on the 30th day of March, 1875. In 1886 Mr. and Mrs. Noonan moved to Hilton township in Iowa County where they lived for many years.

Four children were born to them, a son John who died nineteen years ago and three daughters, Mrs. John Mahan, of Conroy, Mrs. Andrew White, of Williamsburg, and Sarah of the home, all of whom survive.

Mrs. Noonan with her husband shared the trials of the early pioneers and with true Christian fortitude they builded a dwelling place for themselves and their children on the Iowa prairies and lived to see the fruition of their toil ripen into the comforts of the modern American home where they saw their daughters grow into a womanhood of respect and usefulness and where the beloved husband and father passed away in the fullness of years in 1907.

A few years ago Mrs. Noonan purchased a new home in Williamsburg where with her daughter Sarah she continued to reside until her death and where on Monday morning fortified by the last sacraments of the Catholic Church of which she had been a devout member all her life, she peacefully hearkened to the call of the God Whom she had served so well.

The funeral was held on Wednesday morning with Requiem Mass celebrated by her pastor Father Glenn, a St. Mary's church in Williamsburg and she was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo, beside the body of her husband, a large concourse of friends extending their respect by their presence.

Modest, humble and self-effacing, to appreciate Mrs. Noonan one must have known her intimately, but to those permitted this privilege, what a rich storehouse of womanly graces her character unfolded. Firm in the faith of her fathers, her life was a credit to her church, a blessing to her family and a shining example to all who knew her. Humbly appreciative of every kindness, she radiated a kindly charity in her every word and deed, and when amidst the ministrations of her faithful children, she answered the call of her Redeemer, a truly gentlewoman and saintly mother passed to her heavenly reward.

The community sympathizes with the children in their bereavement.

May her soul rest in peace.
