Funeral services for Clarence F. Wandling, 88, Marengo, were held at 10:30am, Wednesday, Sept 16, at First United Methodist Church, Marengo. He died Sunday evening, Sept 13, at Marengo Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since Sept. 4.

The Rev. Mark Young officiated at the service. Organist Audrey Valentine accompanied soloist Rick Gates who sang “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” and “It is No Secret.” Clayton Morlan was usher.

Burial was in Marengo Cemetery. Pallbearers were Vaughn Schulz, John Rohr, C.R. (Bob) Dillin, Keith Wilson, William Spurrier and Ron Shaull, all Marengo. Honorary pallbearers were Bob Olson, Mervin Guehrn, Fred Koenig and Herman Ahrens, all Marengo.

Memorials have been designated for Marengo memorial Hospital or First United Methodist Church and may be left at Hoover-Valentine Funeral Home.

Clarence Forrest Wandling was born in Ladora, Iowa County, Aug. 11, 1904, the fifth of eight children born to Charles and Della Haun Wandling. He moved to Marengo with his family when he was 2. After graduating from Marengo High School in 1922, he ran a taxi service for several years and had a battery shop on Court Avenue.

He married Caroline (Carrie) Alice Fant, Williamsburg, June 19, 1929.

In 1942, he began employment at Amana Refrigeration, Inc., where he continued for 19 years.

He served on the Marengo City Council in the 1940s and was elected mayor of Marengo in 1952.

Following his retirement, the Wandlings moved to Oceanside, Calif., in 1969, where they remained until returning to Iowa in 1981. After living in Victor six years, they moved to Marengo. He was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church, Marengo.

Survivors in addition to his wife, are one daughter, Janet McClymond, Omaha, Neb.; and one son, Larry Wandling, Shalimar, Fla; four grandchildren, Laurie Wandling, Atlanta, Ga.; Lisa Wandling, Clemson, S. Car.; Mike McClymond, Santa Barbara, Calif.; and Kelley (McClymond) VandeBerg, San Diego, Calif.; and one great-granddaughter, Sarah McClymond.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy, who died in 1945; his parents, six brothers and one sister
