Services Held For Merritt ‘Red’ Plagmann, 72

Funeral services for Merritt Arthur “Red” Plagmann, 72, were held Tuesday, May 9, 10:30am, at the United Methodist Church, Norway. He died of cancer early Saturday morning, May 6, 1989, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

The Rev. Douglas Harding, Blairstown, officiated. Mrs. Louis Blackburn was organist. Usher was Wayne Riley. Casket bearers were Norman Miller, Jerry Pollock, John Brockschink, Edwin Kimm, Wilmer Uthoff and Ervin Oftedahl, all Norway. Honorary casket bearers were Christopher Harrington and Michael Harrington, both Brookfield, Wis., both grandsons. A private family burial service was held at the Marengo Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established. Brosh’s Funeral Home, Norway, was in charge of arrangements.

Merritt Arthur Plagmann was born Nov. 5, 1916, the son of Arthur and hazel Eva Merritt Plagmann, at Conroy. He married Dorothy Fant June 14, 1941, at Lancaster, Mo.

He was in the Army Infantry, entering the service Dec. 20, 1944, and took basic training at Camp Fannin, Tyler, Texas. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the occupational army in Japan. He was discharged July 27, 1946, as a sergeant technician fourth class.

He was a welder at Iowa Manufacturing and Cherry Burrell, Cedar Rapids, before retiring.

He had been a member of the Methodist Church and the American Legion, Norway; the Fraternal Order of Eagles Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both Cedar Rapids. He also had been a member of the Elks Club in Mesa, Ariz., where he and his wife had spent the winter months for the last 17 years.

The Plagmanns had been living on a century farm southeast of Norway which had been owned by his great-great-grandfather. They had built their present home in 1958. He enjoyed woodworking and making clocks.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Sharon (Mrs. Tom) Harrington, Brookfield, Wis., and Vickie (Mrs. Gary) Boddicker, Norway. One son, Ronald, Grover, Mo., six grandchildren, and one sister, Evelyn Klein, Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his mother, 1954, and father in 1959, and one brother Donald.
