Death Calls Home Mrs. Walter Smith

Mrs. Minnie E. Smith, 70, wife of Walter E. Smith, died Friday at a Marengo hospital. While her health had been failing for some time, she was seriously ill for only two weeks.

The daughter of Fred and Christena Miller, she was born in Pilot Township, Mar. 18, 1881. She spent her entire life in Iowa county, and since early girlhood at Marengo.

On Aug 21, 1901, she was married to Walter E. Smith. Last August they celebrated with the assistance of many relatives and friends the golden anniversary of this occasion.

In early girlhood Mrs. Smith united with the Methodist church. She has been a faithful worker in all the departments of the church through all those years. She was also an active member of the Rebekah lodge and found a great deal of enjoyment in the Past Grand Circle, with which she was affiliated.

Besides her companion for more than 50 years, she leaves five children, Mrs. Marie K. King of Blairstown, Harold M. Smith and Mrs. Thelma E. Smith of Marengo, Floyd W. Smith of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Irene M. Kimm of Victor; 13 grandchildren, one great grandchild and two sisters, Mrs. Ray Simmons of Marengo and Mrs. Ed Pope of North English.

The funeral service was held at the Marengo Methodist church Sunday afternoon, Jan 6, 1952, at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Arthur M. Eastman.

The body was laid to rest in the IOOF cemetery. Serving as casket bearers were six nephews: Everett, Russell and Alfred Pope; Clarence and Earl Tiernan and Lloyd Simmons.
