Funeral services for Otis M. Stangland, 81, Williamsburg, were held at 1pm Saturday, March 9, at First Lutheran Church, Conroy. He died Wednesday morning; March 6, 2002, at the Williamsburg Care Center, Williamsburg, following an extended illness.
The Rev. Jackie Tjarks officiated at the service.
Burial was in the church cemetery. Caskets bearers were Russell Coleman, Jeff Wille, Dale Chittick, Gerald Von Ahsen, Orie Yoder, Keith Stanerson and Wayne Pfannkuch. Honorary bearers were Pete and Maxine Ahrens, Luella Brockshus, Gilbert and Geneva Von Ahsen, Cathy Coleman, Walter Stanerson, Art Stanerson and Garth Livingston.
Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church of Conroy, the ELCA Women’s Group, and Iowa County Hospice of Compassion or the American Heart Association.
Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, was in charge of arrangements.
Otis Melvin Stangland was born Feb. 6, 1921, at Norway, Iowa, the son of Magnus and Elizabeth Kallem Stangland. He spent his early years in Benton and Linn counties. The family then moved to a farm southeast of Williamsburg where he and his family farmed. He attended Williamsburg High School.
He married Joyce Livingston Sept 18, 1949, at First Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg. He farmed and also operated bulldozers for the Stangland Construction Company, which he and his brother owned. Otis was the neighborhood handyman and mechanic for many years.
Following his retirement from farming, Otis and Joyce were custodians for First Lutheran Church, Conroy. He also did seasonal work for the Pioneer Hybrid Seed Company. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, rural Conroy. Otis was loved and will be missed by his family and many friends and neighbors.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Susan Stangland, Waukegan, Ill; one son, Larry, and fiancée Marsha, Cedar Rapids; one granddaughter, Brandy, Cedar Rapids; two step-granddaughters, Melissa and Tiffany, also Cedar Rapids; four brothers-in-law, Tom, Garth, Dean and Eugene Livingston, and three sisters-in-law, Frances Munson, Edna Stangland and Leona Klever.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edward in 1985 and Elmer in infancy, and one grandson, Corey Lee Stangland in infancy.
