Funeral services for Viola L. George, 84, North English, were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Millersburg. She died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at her home.

The Rev. Paul Nus officiated at the service. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church stained glass project or Hospice Compassus. Viola L. George was born March 19, 1926, the daughter of August C. and Bertha Koehn Baethke, in Williamsburg. She attended St. John’s Lutheran School near Victor.

She married Kenneth H. George April 15, 1955, in North English. She lived in Iowa County all her life and was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Millersburg, where she taught Sunday school for many years.

She was baptized April 18, 1926, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, and was confirmed May 25, 1941, at St. John Lutheran Church, Victor. She was a member of the Ladies LWML and the VFW Legion Auxiliary. She was a Cub Scout leader for many years, babysat for 12 years, worked in housekeeping at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and later at the English Valley Care Center, North English. She loved to quilt and crochet and was known for her popcorn balls at Halloween.

George is survived by three sons, J. Gus George, Black River Falls, Wis.; Kenneth “Kinker” George, North English, and Robert George and wife Janet, Williamsburg; one daughter and her husband, Francie and Tracey Raders, Platte, S.D.; one god child, Tabby Foubert, Indianapolis, Ind.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer (Tobe) Baethke, Keswick, and Floyd Baethke, Montezuma.

She was preceded in death by her husband, in January 1981; her parents; an infant daughter and two brothers, Merlen and Melborn Baethke.
