Paul J. Monaghan, age 82 of Mount Vernon, formerly of Marengo, died Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at the Hallmark Care Center in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 24, 2010, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Little Creek Cemetery, rural Kinross, Iowa. Visitation: 5 to 7 P.M. Friday, July 23, 2010 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo where a Vigil Service will be held at 7 P.M. Memorials may be contributed to the Iowa Chapter of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association (APDA).

Paul is survived by three daughters, Mary Kay Harris (Terry) of Lisbon, IA, Pamela Jean Roe (Gene Sutter) of Goodyear, AZ and Lisa Ann Greve (Duane) of Kimballton, IA; 9 grandchildren, Toni Wiesenhofer (Chad) of Mount Vernon, Adam Harris (Lucinda) of Keystone, Christopher Gorsh (Jen) of Harper, Zachary Gorsh (Teri) of North English, Victoria Hansen (Kurt) of Walnut, Spencer Greve of Kimballton, Heath Greve of Omaha, NE, Annie Greve (Joey Inman) of Exira, IA and John Roe of Cedar Rapids; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Marlene in 1997, a brother Ronald and a sister Mary Phyllis Monaghan.

Paul Joseph Monaghan was born May 7, 1928 in Kinross, Iowa, the son of James and Regina Conrad Monaghan. He graduated from Kinross High School in 1946 and served in the U.S. Army for 2 years during the Korean Conflict. Paul married Mary Marlene Zuber-Erue on December 28, 1971 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo.

He farmed for many years and then the couple owned and operated the Marengo Variety Store.

Paul enjoyed woodworking and carving. He loved to travel and spend time with his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo and previously a member at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in North English. He had also served on the Little Creek Cemetery Board.
