Larry K. Banes, 02 Nov 1933 – 06 Aug 2010 76 yrs

Celebration of life services for Larry K. Banes, 76, Williamsburg, formerly of North English, were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9, at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service, North English. He died with his family by his side Friday, Aug. 6, 2010, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, from complications of cancer.

The Rev. Kirk Statler officiated at the service. Organist was Tanya Statler. Vocalists were Paula Banes and Rachel Kiffel. Musical selections included “The Old Rugged Cross” and “In The Garden.” Honorary casket bearers were Jack Dunlap, Arnold Carter, Carroll Bauer, Russell Bucher, Glenn Cobb and Cody Calkins. A general memorial fund has been established.

Larry K. Banes was born Nov. 2, 1933, in North English, the son of Wayne and Eva Harris Banes. He graduated from North English High School in 1951. He married Shirley Evers Nov. 2, 1952, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. He farmed and owned and operated Banes Electric, worked at the North English fertilizer plant and finally worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals until his retirement. Since retiring, he spent the last 10 years as a valet greeter at the hospital.

He lived in North English for 44 years, moving to Williamsburg in 2006. He was a member of the Farmers Lodge and was a past Worshipful Master and a 50-year Mason.

He enjoyed wintering in Arizona, golfing, fishing, Hawkeye sports and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Banes is survived by his wife; his children and their spouses, Garry and Darla Banes, Des Moines; Kelly and Paula Banes, Cedar Falls; Cindy Belland and Tony Carson, Williamsburg, and Lonny and Trish Banes, North English; 10 grandchildren, Amber Engstrom, Hannah Banes, Emily Banes, Kelsey Calkins, Blair Belland, Kiley Belland, Lexi Belland, Michelle Ayers, Lisa Vargas and Samantha Banes; two great-grandchildren, Melaina Vargas and Miranda Ayers; one sister and her husband, Irene and Leon Blaylock, South English; one brother, Lyle and Dottie Banes, Granite City, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
