Robert J. “Smitty” Smith, 67, Renton, Wash., formerly of Marengo, died June 7, 2010, at Valley Medical Center, Renton. Committal services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 11, at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Wash.

Luncheon followed at Gloria’s Restaurant, Maple Valley.

Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Foundation or the American Heart Association.

Robert James Smith was born Aug. 8, 1942, in Marengo, the son of Robert and Helen Smith. He was raised in Marengo and attended local schools. He was a wonderful athlete, playing football and excelling in baseball. He also won numerous awards for swimming and diving. After graduation from high school, he joined the Air Force and served four years as military police.
He settled in Washington after the service and worked for Boeing for 30 years.

His family remembers him as a loving, kind, generous and loyal man who was always happy, joking and a bit mischievous. He loved to fish, hunt, travel, dance (he was a great dancer) and sing. He had a wonderful voice.

Smith is survived by his loving wife, Pat; sons, Don and Dan Zorne and Steve Martin; daughters, Kathy Simpson and Kimberly Marshall; grandchildren, Jacob, Joseph, Hannah, Tyia, Erin and Lacey, and two sisters, Sue Smith, Cedar Rapids, and Connie Jameison and husband Randy, Anderson, S.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael Martin, and his step-father, Richard Brown.
