Celebration of life services for Bess M. Schwarting, 83, Oxford, was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy. She died Saturday, June 26, 2010, at the Keokuk County Health Center, Sigourney.

The Rev. Gary Sears officiated at the service. Organist was Shirley Madoerin. Musical selections included “Let Us Ever Walk With Jesus,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee.” Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Conroy. Casket bearers were Rick Schwarting, Craig Schwarting, Art Schwarting, Kevin Schwarting, Ronni Schwarting and Matt Owen. Honorary casket bearers were Robert Nowakowski, Tony Byrd, Lance McNeil and Jason Krupar.

Memorials may be made for the Keokuk/Mahaska Hospice. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Williamsburg, was in charge of arrangements. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com., under obituaries.

Bess Marie Schwarting was born July 10, 1926, in Keystone, the daughter of George and Emma (Erichsen) Jordt. She grew up in Van Horne and Belle Plaine and graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1944. She married Clifford A. Schwarting Aug. 12, 1945, in Williamsburg. The couple lived in the Homestead area until 1955, when they moved east of Williamsburg. In 2000, they moved to Oxford. She worked at Funk’s, Belle Plaine; at Holden’s and for over 20 years at the Colony Haus Restaurant.

She enjoyed camping, bowling, playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy.

Schwarting is survived by three sons and their wives, Harlan and Leota Schwarting, Williamsburg; Gary and Leanne Schwarting, Oxford, and Allen and Linda Schwarting, Williamsburg; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one brother-in-law and his wife, Duane and Darlene Schwarting, Homestead.

She was preceded in death by her husband, in December 2009; her parents; three brothers, Elmer, Donald and Oliver, and two sisters, Delpha Van Scoyoc and Irene Jordt.
