Edwin Eckert, 85 yrs

Memorial Mass for Edwin J. Eckert, 85, Peoria, Ill., formerly of Marengo, was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 26, at St. Jude Church. He died Friday, June 18, 2010, at Proctor Hospital Emergency Room.

The Rev. Patrick Henehan officiated at the service.

Edwin J. Eckert was born July 15, 1924, in Marengo, the son of Carl LeRoy and Sarah Ellen Humphrey Eckert.

He was a World War II Army Air Corp. veteran P47 pilot with the 527th Fighter Squadron, serving in the European Theatre of Operations. He was a managing engineer at Caterpillar, Inc.

He married Eleanor Madro Jan. 20, 1990, in South Bend, Ind.

He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church and the Society of Automotive Engineers (S.A.E.). He was a member of Navioneers and past president of the Midwest chapter. He played the trumpet in the Air Force Band, loved to fly his airplane and was an avid reader.

Eckert is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Therese and John Heiser, Peoria; Colleen Meyer, Brighton, Mich., and Karen and Dave Peterson, Brimfield; six grandchildren, Beth, Sarah, David, Rebekah, Danny and Kasey; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Verabeth Bricker, Victor, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Darlene Sayers; one nephew, Chris Bricker, and the mother of his daughters, Helen Pfingsten Eckert.
