MRS. J. H. TIERNAN DIES THURSDAY

Mrs. J. H. Tiernan, aged 68 years, died at her home here early Thursday morning following an illness of years. Funeral services were held in Saint Joseph’s church Saturday morning at 9:30. Rev. J.M. Cash read the Mass of requiem and officiated at the services at the grave. Her granddaughter Helen Hannon presided at the pipe organ and Saint Joseph’s choir sang the responses. Mr. J. B. McAreavy sang two solos. “Veni Jesu” and “My Child Give Me Thy Heart.” The pallbearers were: J.L. Naughton, Bernard Monaghon, James McCune, W.J. Leahy, Daniel O’Connell and P.J. Masterson.

Mrs. Tiernan was born in Marengo Nov. 1, 1871 as Sofia Miller the daughter of Frederick and Christine Klever Miller, pioneer settlers in Iowa County. October 1, 1890 she was married to John H. Tiernan in Saint Michael’s church Holbrook. The home was at once established on a farm three miles west of Parnell. Later the couple moved to town where the home has been made for forty years. Mrs. Tiernan was a woman of sterling character. She was thrifty, home loving and loyal. No sacrificing of comfort or exertion of toil was too great to undertake for her husband and children and the wreath of love and affection she lavished on them was amply returned to her during her invalid years. Their solicitation for her comfort and happiness was proverbial. An invalid for 12 years she bore her affliction with patience and resignation born of Christian fortitude. She knew suffering but never complained. She knew sorrow but smiled through her tears and trusted in God. She was loved and admired by neighbors and friends, being a stranger to unkind words that might hurt or offend. She is survived by her husband and four children. Mrs. Frank Hannon and Clarence of Parnell; Earl of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. L.E. Ward of Milwaukee, Wis. There are eight grandchildren and three sisters; Mrs. Walter Smith and Mrs. Ray Simmons of Marengo and Mrs. Edward Pope of North English. An infant daughter Anne and a son Clark who died ten months ago preceded her in death.
