Glendola M. Herman Koch, age 90 of Dike and Aplington, formerly of Marengo, died Sunday, May 16, 2010 at Maple Manor in Aplington, following an extended illness. Funeral services: 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 19, 2010, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Chaplain Mary Beth Siemann officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 3 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established. Glendola is survived by two sons, Daniel Herman (Tammy Davis) of Ozark, MO, and Glen Herman of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Earline Wheeler (Dewey) of Belle Plaine and Celia Harken (Larry) of Aplington; eighteen grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister Kathryn Johnson of Laporte City. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Earl Herman in 1962, and Laurence Koch in 2003; a son Earl Herman, Jr.; a great-grandson James Parmenter; two brothers, George and John Richardson; three sisters, Marvel Pease, Naomi Wilkinson and Doris Alcott and two half brothers, LeRoy Forrester and Robert Lee Richardson. Glendola Marie Richardson was born August 10, 1919 in Murdo, South Dakota, the daughter of George and Della (Ginther) Richardson. She received her education in the Marengo schools and married Earl Herman on March 11, 1937. Earl died in 1962. She married Laurence Koch on August 14, 1964. Glendola mended books for the Marengo schools, and managed the staff dining room at the Oakdale TB facility. She later was employed as a private housekeeper for various Marengo residents, and UNI College, and as a cook for local restaurants. Glendola enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, fishing and reading. She spent time antique collecting, home decorating, and doing ceramics. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Hudson, the Wesleyan Methodist Church, and the Church of the Nazarene in Marengo. She attended various Bible study groups and was a member of the Dike American Legion Auxiliary, where she served as chaplain. Glendola was a very loving and caring person and enjoyed assisting others. She shared the abundant garden produce and her home-cooked meals and bread with them. She faithfully cared for an elderly Danish gentleman in Dike for many years. She sought the help of the Dike American Legion to place this gentleman into the Soldiers’ Home in Marshalltown when he was no longer able to live alone.
