Darlene Anna (Pretz) Hacker, age 80, died Thursday, May 20, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 25, 2010, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 3 to 7 P.M. Monday, May 24, 2010 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements. Darlene is survived by her children: Patricia Wardenburg (Greg) of Vinton, Debra Hinrichs (Vance) of Marengo, Raymond Hacker (Sari) of Marengo and Ronald Hacker (Debra) of Waterloo; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; a brother Eldon Pretz of Cedar Rapids; and two sisters, Marlene Miller of Marengo and Betty Morstad of Roanoke, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Donald. Darlene Anna Pretz was born December 1, 1929 in rural Ladora, Iowa, the daughter of Edwin E. and Martha Teggatz Pretz. She graduated from the Marengo High School in 1947 and the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing, Des Moines in 1950. Darlene married Donald L. Hacker on September 17, 1950 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo. She worked for many years as a registered nurse at the Marengo Memorial Hospital and the Grinnell Regional Hospital. She also worked as a home healthcare nurse. Following her retirement from the Marengo hospital, Darlene assisted the elderly in their homes. Darlene was a lifelong resident of Iowa County. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo, the Ladies Aid and Altar Guild. She participated in Bible study groups and Circle. She was a charter member of the Marengo Garden Club, a member of the Iowa County Historical Society, the Iowa County Genealogy Society, and the Iowa County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
