Memorial services for Irene A. Houck, 88, Hendersonville, Nev., were held Oct. 15 2009, at Canyon Ridge Christian Church, Las Vegag, Nev. She died at Mountain view Hospital Sept. 18, 2009, after a short illness.
Irene Arbanna Houck was born Dec. 7, 1920, at Hartwick, the daughter of Walter and Ada Benton Torrance. the family later moved to Grinnell, where she graduated from Grinnell High School in 1939.
She married Basil J. Houck in May of 1945 at Atlantic. The couple lived in the Chicago, Ill., area for many years and had a winter home in Madera Canyon, south of Tucson, Ariz., for many years, as well.
In 1972, she and her husband purchased the Ladora Motel and she had an antique shop there. He died May 26, 1975.
She laster sold the Ladora Motel and moved to her home in Madera Canyon. She later moved into an assisted living apartment in Green valley, Ariz. Her health began to decline in 2007 and she moved to Henderson, Nev., to be near her son, Dan Houck.
Houck is survived by one son, Dan Houck, Las Vegas; three grandchildren, Nick Houck, Lindsey Houck and Alex Houck, all Tucson; one sister, Carol J. Kensler, Marengo, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Marilyn Landon; three half-sisters, Ruth Ostrom, Evelyn Sherwood and Lois VanRentergham, and two half-brothers, Scott Torrance and Clair Latcham, Phoenix, Ariz.
