Elmer John Dittrich, 89, of Amana, died Monday, May 4, 2009 at Colonial Manor of Amana following an extended illness. Funeral services: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana, with Elder Tony Berger officiating. Burial will be in the Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at the church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society or the Amana Heritage Society. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Emma; 2 daughters, Jeanene Hoppe (Ray) of Fergus Falls, MN, and Jacquelyn Pettit of Middle, Iowa; one son, Howard (Teri) Dittrich of San Diego, CA; 6 grandchildren, Michelle Long (Bruce), Chris (Michelle) Hoppe, Melissa Forbes (Chris), Randy Fordice, Jessica Dittrich, Mark Dittrich; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Henrietta Hertel, and brother Willie.
Elmer John Dittrich was born July 19, 1919 in Homestead, Iowa, to August and Louise (Lizzie) Dittrich. He graduated from Amana High School in 1937, and began his employment at Amana Refrigeration in 1937. He retired in 1988 as the longest term Amana Refrigeration employee in its history (51 years). Elmer served in the US Navy 1944-45. Elmer married Emma Kathryn Leichsenring on July 20, 1940. He was a member of the Amana Church where he was song leader and soloist at many weddings, a member of the Masons and the Shriners where he sang with the Shriner Chanters. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing at Elmcrest Country Club. He also bred and raised Labrador retrievers.
