FINAL RITES HELD SATURDAY MORNING FOR M.F. NAUGHTON
Resident of County For 49 Years; Survived By Wife and Seven Children

Death came early last Thursday morning, May 16, to claim M.F. Naughton as he slept peacefully away. He had suffered a heart attack on Wednesday evening but his condition was not considered at all dangerous when he retired for the night.

Mr. Naughton had enjoyed good health all his life and had been about as usual during the first days of the week, having been up town on Tuesday to visit with friends and attend to some business.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 9:00 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic church. Rev. John Manning of Holbrook read the requiem high mass, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Carroll of Marengo and Rev. D.C. Browne of Parnell in the sanctuary. The St. Mary's choir sang the responses during the mass.

As the procession was leaving the church Mrs. Melba O'Donnell sang the hymn "Lord Have Mercy and Compassion." Pallbearers who served were Bert Hanson, T.J. McDonough, Lambert Morrin, Eldon Simmons, Frank Walsh and Robert Elwood. The Rev. J.J. Gaule had charge of the committal rites at the grave.

Michael F. Naughton was born Feb. 24, 1870, on a farm near Charlotte, in Clinton county, Iowa, a son of John and Bridget Cunningham Naughton. He came to Iowa county with his parents when only seven years of age, the family establishing their home west of Parnell.

He was married Oct. 8, 1895 to Miss Mary E. Kilroy at St. Aloysius church in Kansas City, Mo. The couple established their home on a farm one mile west of Parnell where they lived until 1910, when the family moved to the John Kilroy farm 2 1/2 miles south of Williamsburg. In 1937 Mr. Naughton retired from the strenuous life on the farm and since then had lived in town.

There were eight children born to Mr. and Mrs. Naughton, all of whom are living but one, Walter, who died at the age of 2 1/2 years in 1903. The children are Clarence Naughton and Mrs. Lee Glanz, both of Iowa City; J. Paul and James F., both of Marengo, Mrs. Rita Driscoll, Nell and John L. Naughton, all living at home. Besides Mrs. Naughton and the seven children, other survivors include three grandchildren, Gerald and Winifred Naughton and Billie Driscoll; one sister, Mrs. E. B. Sheridan, and one brother, James L. Naughton, both of Parnell.

On Oct. 8, 1945, Mr. and Mrs. Naughton were happy to have reached the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding date and their children arranged an appropriate celebration of the event with all members of the family present except one, Paul. Jim and Jack had returned home only a short time previous from service in the armed forces.

A large group of relatives and friends from a distance were in attendance at the last rites including the following: Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Naughton, Mrs. Lucy Naughton, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Naughton, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Elgas, George Osweiler and sons Victor and Charles, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pine, M.L. Kalleney and Thos. Elwood, all of Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Wandling, Judge J.P. Gaffney, Mrs. Frances Redman and Mrs. Geo. Franagan, Marengo.

Mrs. Maud Naughton and Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Naughton and daughter of Iowa City, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Spivey and Bernice Hervey of South English, Mr. and Mrs. T.R. Walerich and daughter Mary Elizabeth of Fairfield, Mrs. Esther O'Donnell of Rock Island, Ill., and Cletus Osweiler of State Center, as well as numerous friends from Parnell, Holbrook and the surrounding vicinity.
