Charles Eldon (Pete) Montross was born on October 17, 1923, in Millersburg, IA, the son of Andrew H. and Fern Pope Montross. He grew up in the Millersburg community and graduated from Millersburg High School. Pete served in the Marine Corps during World War II and was wounded in the first landing at Iwo Jima. On June 6, 1952, Pete was united in marriage to Beverly Morrison in Keswick, IA. They made their home on a farm north of Millersburg until moving into town in 2002. Pete was an avid Chicago White Sox and Iowa Hawkeye Fan. His life revolved around his family, grandchildren, farming and sports. He was a member of the Millersburg United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post # 521. He died at his home in Millersburg on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 12 days. He is survived by his wife Beverly Montross of Millersburg; children: Janet Montross of Millersburg, IA; Larry (Donna) Montross of Winfield, IA; Steve (Natalie) Montross of Winterset, IA; Bill (Jeanie) Montross of Millersburg, IA; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sisters Geraldine (Tiny) Gerard of North English, IA, Dorla Dutcher of Cedar Falls, IA and Betty Husband of Millersburg; IA. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister Imogene, sister Gail Gerard, brother Ward Montross, daughter-in-law Susan Montross and 4 brothers-in-law. A Celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church in Millersburg on Thursday, April 2, 2009, with Pastor Ben Wilson and Rev. Jerry Swinton officiating. Burial will be in the Millersburg Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 PM to 8 PM on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. A Memorial Fund has been established for Camp Courageous, the Millersburg United Methodist Church, and Iowa City Hospice.
