Florence Mosdell Smith, age 89 of Marengo, died Thursday, June 5, 2008 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 9, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo with Rev. Gerald Rife officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 4 P.M. Sunday, June 8, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.

She is survived by her son Robert and wife Joyce of Marengo, a grandson, Jeffrey Smith and wife Danielle also of Marengo, a granddaughter, Megan Martin and husband Chad of Monroe, CT, and great-granddaughters, Caleigh Smith, Taylor Smith, Jaden Smith and Reese Martin. Also surviving are two brothers, Oscar Mosdell of Bay Roberts, Newfoundland, Canada and David Mosdell of Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert Gordon Smith in June 1959, a sister Joyce Kielly and three brothers, Stirling Mosdell, Adolphus Mosdell and Noah Mosdell. Also preceding her were her father-in-law, Frank R. Smith, her mother-in-law, Leila Tompkins Smith and a sister-in-law, F. Ramona Smith Coker.

Florence Gertrude Mosdell was born on September 22, 1918 in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland, Canada, the daughter of Stirling and Susie Dwyer Mosdell. She met Robert Gordon Smith while he was serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. She moved to Iowa in May of 1945 and they married on June 7, 1945 at the Presbyterian Church in Marengo. Florence was employed at Peterson Pharmacy in Marengo, the Cedar Rapids Business College and Amana Refrigeration. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Order of Eastern Star. Florence enjoyed spending time with her family, quilting, sewing, knitting and baking.
