Ruth Amy Dittert, age 80 of Hiawatha, formerly of Amana, died Friday, March 14, 2008 at the Mercy Hospice House in Hiawatha, following an extended illness. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 17, 2008 at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 50 Edgewood Rd. NW, Cedar Rapids with Fr. Michael Podhajsky officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fairfax. Friends may call from 2 to 4 P.M. Sunday, March 16, 2008 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A Rosary will be recited at 8:00 A.M. on Monday at St. Jude’s Parish Center with visitation following until service time. Memorials may be contributed to Hospice of Mercy, Cedar Rapids.

She is survived by her children, Diane Smith and husband Marvin of Cedar Rapids, Patrick Dittert and wife Nancy of Perry, Iowa, and Mary Ellen Brickley of Austin, TX; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings, Everett Wetterling, Bill Wetterling, Florence Teller, Eunice Krauss, Ray Wetterling, Lorraine Hodawanus, and Winnie Parson, and a daughter-in-law Linda DeSotel of Fairfax. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Francis Dittert in 2002, a son John in 1981, a daughter Elizabeth in infancy, a brother, and 2 sisters.

Ruth Amy Wetterling was born January 29, 1928 in Ladysmith, WI, the daughter of Emil B. and Grace J. Angel Wetterling. She married Francis “Doc” Dittert on February 24, 1948. The couple moved to the Amanas in 1950. After lovingly raising her family Ruth finished her own education through Kirkwood Community College. Ruth worked as a nurses’ aide for several years. She also worked at the Amana Woolen Mills and the Village Winery in Amana.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fairfax and the VFW Auxiliary.

Our family wishes to thank the Evergreen Estates I and Mercy Hospice House for the kindness and care extended to our mother during her stay with them.
