Williamsburg- James Dale Turner was born September 20, 1933, in Des Moines, Iowa the son of Forrest and Ecil (Baker) Turner. He graduated from Carlisle High School in 1952. He served in the US Navy from 1952-1956. He was united in marriage to Nancy Shilling on September 4, 1959 in Des Moines. James graduated from Simpson College in 1963. After graduation, he taught and coached at Lohrville High School from 1963-1967 and at Beaman-Conrad from 1967-1973. James and Nancy moved to Williamsburg in 1973, to start the girls basketball and softball programs at Williamsburg High School. He coached girls basketball from 1973-1982 and girls softball from 1974-1992. He retired from teaching and coaching in 1992. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. He and his family were avid racing fans, traveling to Indianapolis for the “500" and camping at Knoxville at the Knoxville raceway, meeting many dear friends. He was a member of the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797 of Williamsburg. James died Monday, February 4, 2008, at his home after a sudden illness. He lived 74 years, 4 months and 15 days. He is survived by hi wife Nancy of Williamsburg; 2 sons Andy (Lisa) Turner of Bloomington, IL and Chris (Kayleen) Turner of Camanche, IA; 4 grandchildren: Brent, Brittany, Karissa and Kiana. He was preceded in death by his parents. Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:00 pm on Friday, February 8, 2008, at the Richardson Funeral Home in Carlisle, IA. Burial will be in the Carlisle Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 pm on Thursday at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg and on Friday from 10:30 am until service time at the Richardson Funeral Home in Carlisle. Memorial may be made to establish a "James Turner Memorial Scholarship Fund".
